History

Early history

Black Lab Games was founded in 2008 with the intention of creating game tools. However it didn't take long for a change of direction, and the focus moved to game development The first game to be released was Star Hammer Tactics, a casual sci-fi themed turn-based strategy game. It was first developed for XBLIG and released in June 2009. Around this time, Sony announced the 'minis' program - small download-only games for the PSP and PS3. Black Lab Games applied to be in the program and was accepted. Star Hammer Tactics was ported to the PSP, and released in PAL territories in July 2010, and North American territories in April 2011. The game was overhauled significantly and ported to the iPad. It was released in November 2011, free-to-play with an In-App purchase to unlock the full game. Star Hammer Tactics was finally ported to PC and released on Desura and Gamergate in March 2012.

2013-2015 - Star Hammer: The Vanguard Propechy enters development

In late 2013, Black Lab Games started development of Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy (SH:tVP). The primary intended platform was PC. SH:tVP was a significantly bigger game, with an expanded storyline and a new WEGO turn system. In this system, the player and AI simultaneously plan their moves, and then see the commands executed in real time. This system allows for deep and thoughtful strategies, whilst using a more action focussed presentation. Black Lab Games received a grant from the Australian Interactive Games Fund to assist with the development of the game. A publishing agreement was signed with Slitherine, the UK-based strategy games specialist publisher. SH:tVP was released on PC and Mac in June 2015. It was ported to iPad and released in December 2015. In late August 2016 it was released in Xbox One, and in early September on PS4. This was the first time Black Lab Games developed for current generation consoles.

2016-2017 - Battlestar Galactica Deadlock

After the release of Star Hammer: The Vanguard Prophecy, a deal was struck between Black Lab Games, Slitherine and Universal Cable Productions to create a strategy game based on the 2004 SyFy TV show, Battlestar Galactica. Battlestar Galactica Deadlock was released for PC on August 31, 2017, and is scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on December 8, 2017
